iPad: First Reactions

by Aaron on April 3, 2010

After anxiously waiting all morning and into the afternoon, around 1:40pm local time the UPS truck arrived with my iPad. In usual Apple fashion it had minimal yet stylish packaging. Random thoughts:

    Aaron with his iPad

  • It feels a tad heavier than I was expecting.
  • The smaller power “brick” charger is nice (about 1/3 the size of the one for my MacBook).
  • The device came with a 100% battery charge.
  • Apple tries to get you to sign up for MobileMe during the registration process. Does anyone actually use that?
  • I got the 16GB model, appears there’s 14.2GB of available space on a brand new device.
  • The initial synchronization process was very straightforward with respect to music, videos, photos, and apps.
  • Syncing photos is very easy. Look for a blog post on that later today.
  • The screen is beautiful.
  • The touch interface is great – much like my experience with an iPod Touch, except the larger gestures on the bigger screen just “feel” more natural.
  • The iBooks app doesn’t come on the device – it needs to be downloaded from the app store. I can’t help but think this is a snafu and that Apple wanted it on the device but wasn’t able to get it ready in time.
  • I had no problems getting the device onto my WEP-secured and MAC-address limited wifi network.
  • Social Photo Talk looks great on the iPad browser, other than the Wibya toolbar (at the bottom of the screen). I’ll have to look into that.

More to come as I settle in.
