Technology moves fast. There are new tools being released online constantly. Some of them seem pretty crazy at first, but if you’re interested in continuing to market your photography business in new and interesting ways, the new trends need to be watched. Twitter? 140 characters in response to “What are you doing right now?” Seems like a crazy idea at first, but it’s grown into a powerful networking and communication tool that’s driving business.
There’s a parallel to the camera gear… look at some of the new features that are arriving on DSLRs. Crazy-high ISO settings. Sub-$1000 cameras that will record video. Are you embracing these new tools? Even if you haven’t yet started using them for your business, you should be aware and learning.
If you wait until tools and technologies are completely mainstream, you’re behind the game, and you will lose clients and sales because of your refusal to move forward.
A great example of someone who is willing to try new things is wedding photographer and blogger David Ziser of Digital ProTalk. He opened his studio over 30 years ago, so he’s a well-established photographer with tons of real-world experience. David isn’t content to sit around and rest on his experience; he’s constantly trying out new technologies including blogging, video blogging, webcasts, and Twitter. Similarly he’s embracing new photography tech such as the video functions of Canon’s 5D Mk II.
It’s not practical to spend a lot of time with every little new thing that comes along, but you need to spend time with some of them. Some may pan out and be great successes… others might fizzle and be filed away in the “learning experience” bucket, but if you don’t try anything at all, your chance of hitting one of those successes is zero.
