Want to know the nine words that will absolutely tank the participation rate on a blog? They’re really not that secret. If fact, every WordPress blog comes ready-built so that you can easily serve up these nine words to your readers if you choose. Other blog platforms are similarly equipped. Those nine words? Here they are:

You must be logged in to post a comment

That’s it. You might be thinking you’re reducing potential comment spam by requiring registration to comment, but what you’re really reducing is participation. If you’re using an anti-spam system such as Akismet (included with WordPress and available for other platforms), it’s absurd to make your readers jump through hoops to participate on your site.
