Meeting some of the people I've met online has been just like meeting old friends, not meeting for the first time. And in other cases, social media serves as a great pre-introduction - I can walk up to someone at an event and say "Hi, I'm Kathleen, we've met on Twitter" (or on their blog, or in the forum, whatever).
